Beaver�s two goals lift Grizz in playoff, 3-0 SPRINGFIELD � Junior striker Scott Beaver scored two goals to lead Ashland to a 3-0 Class 4A state playoff victory over Thurston Tuesday. The Grizzlies play at Corvallis in a second-round game Saturday. Ashland scored the only first-half goal when Beaver took a crossing pass from midfielder Brett Peterson and scored from 18 yards at the fourth minute. "I came on a diagonal run," said Beaver. "I trapped Brett�s pass, then shot it into the far corner." Beaver gave Ashland a 2-0 lead eight minutes into the second half off an assist from Jesse Hodges. Peterson took advantage of a mistake by the Thurston goalie to score the final goal at the 60th minute. Ashland was forced to play one man down for the last 15 minutes of the game, following the ejection of sophomore Alex Christlieb. "The first half we started strong," said Ashland coach Eisa Tiaa Toutou. "But then we slowed down. We have to be more consistent. And we have to play our game � control the space, control the ball and one-touch passing." The Grizzlies received strong play at the midfield from Mathew Sharp, Jesse Hodges, Quinn Neely and Christlieb. "We�re not a high-scoring team," Thurston coach Steve Morelock said. "We play a lot of defense. But when they got that early goal, it took us out of our game plan. We had to double team and play harder. That left some of their players unmarked and wore us out." Ashland had an 11-9 edge in shots on goal and a 4-3 margin in corner kicks. HENLEY 3, ST. MARY�S 0 � At Klamath Falls, Henley received goals from three different players and captured the District 6 No. 3 berth in the state playoffs with the league playoff victory. The Hornets will open state at Junction City on Saturday. Henley led 1-0 at halftime on Travis Carter�s goal at the 29th minute. Stuart Ward and Jesse Smith scored second-half goals for the Hornets. St. Mary�s completed the season with a 9-6 record. Girls GRANTS PASS 4, FOREST GROVE 3, SHOOTOUT � At Grants Pass, the Cavemen battled back from a 3-1 halftime deficit for a win in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs. Junior Natasha Crook sent the game into overtime with a goal in the 75th minute. In the shootout, senior goalie Alicia Pilcher blocked two of Forest Grove�s shots, and freshman Katie Lamont scored the deciding goal. The Cavemen, 9-3-2 overall, play at Jesuit on Friday.
