Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell Schools did their homework Phoenix-Talent district buildings received a summer makeover — from floor to ceiling By DAMIAN MANN Mail Tribune PHOENIX — Renovations soon will be complete at all five district schools, providing safer, more energy-efficient campuses. The Phoenix-Talent district has used $16.2 million in voter-approved bonds for a variety of projects, including new flooring and interior lightingat all schools. Every classroom in the district will have heating and air conditioning systems as well. District Business Manager Doug Spani said there could be money left over to take care of other projects. "We’re hoping for some extra dollars, but we won’t know until sometime next year," he said. As part of the upgrades, district schools were subjected to an energy audit to determine the efficiency of their windows, doors and lighting. Here are other projects by school: At Talent Middle School, the district expects the addition of classrooms and remodeling of the front area and office to be complete by November. A new bus loop was used for the first time this week at the start of school. Talent Elementary School got a facelift to improve its streetside appearance. Work is being wrapped up on a new gym/cafeteria, which should be complete by October. A new parking lot that benefits both the elementary and middle schools has been completed. Orchard Hill Elementary should have a bus loop and classroom addition completed by December. The bus loop will incorporate changes prompted by neighbors’ concerns over traffic and bus fumes. Phoenix Elementary students have begun using a new gym/cafeteria and a health room. Phoenix High School, where the ceiling and gym roof were replaced last year, will get new theater seating and a new choir room. These projects should be complete by early 2003. The only project that still needs to go to bid are new district offices. They will be about 4,000 to 5,000 square feet.
