Raider men fall in tourney REDDING, Calif. -- Southern Oregon University shot only 9-for-30 from the field in the first half of its men's basketball game with California Baptist and fell 80-69 Friday in the Simpson Tournament. It was the second game of the year for the Raiders. On Thursday, they defeated host Simpson, 76-42. SOU coach Brian McDermott was impressed with California Baptist. "They are a real good basketball team," he said. "But we're getting better." McDermott said it was a good warm-up for the Raiders because California Baptist is similar to teams they'll play in conference. "It's good to get that kind of competition now," he said. Southern Oregon played California Baptist virtually even in the second half, outscoring the host, 41-40. Tom Chipps led the Raiders with 28 points and five rebounds. Teammate Chris Schmerbach added 13 points, and Amos Baker had 11 points and a team-high six rebounds. SOU shot 18-for-39 from the field in the second half.
