Eagle Point blasts Klamath Union, 44-6 KLAMATH FALLS -- In a season where Eagle Point has struggled offensively, senior running back Evan Pogue has been a bright spot. Pogue excelled again Friday as the Eagles got their offense untracked during a 44-6 season-ending Southern Oregon Conference victory over Klamath Union. Pogue, who entered the game tied for third in the SOC in rushing with 722 yards, scored three touchdowns and gained 142 of the Eagles' 318 yards on the ground. "Evan ran tough and real hard," Eagle Point coach Mike Johnston said. "Obviously we could have given him the ball more, but we spread it around amongst a number of guys." Eagle Point (3-6, 3-4 SOC) held the Pelicans on their first two possessions of the game. On each occasion after Klamath punted, the Eagles put together sustained scoring drives to take a 14-0 first-quarter lead. A fumble recovery by Eagle Point deep in Pels territory in the second period set up a 20-yard field goal by Kirk Roberts to increase the margin to 17-0. The Pelicans scored their only touchdown late in the first half on a 3-yard pass from quarterback Dylan Woodrum to L.J. Newsom. But the Eagles came right back in the final 1 minutes to score on quarterback Ben Scott's 3-yard pass to Andy Jacoby for a 23-3 lead at intermission. "Our offense was able to put the ball in the end zone on a regular basis, something we haven't been doing lately," said Johnston. "We were able to run the ball effectively and Scott was able to effectively throw the ball." Scott was 11-of-20 for 173 yards and had no interceptions. He had the one TD pass to Jacoby and ran for another score. The junior quarterback was elevated to starter when Nick Rouhier went down with a broken collarbone against Roseburg Oct. 15. "He's been gaining a little experience each week," said Johnston, "and it paid off for him tonight." Today's Sports Index Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1999, Medford, OR U.S.A.
