The heavier holiday traffic and changing winter weather requires alertness at the wheel. Allow extra time to reach your destination. Be prepared for unexpected delays or conditions that may slow you down. Try to schedule driving for daylight hours. Carry emergency supplies. Your kit should include jumper cables, flares, a flashlight, and basic tools such as a screwdriver, pliers and wrenches. You should also carry a blanket and outdoor wear as a precaution. If you’re traveling through mountain passes, carry tire chains and know how to put them on. Don’t let favorable road conditions lull you into a false sense of security; frost, ice and snow may surprise you in shaded areas. Minimize driving distractions. Put pets in travel kennels, give your children games to play or books to read to keep them occupied, and pull off the road if you must use your cell phone. Advertisement Properly secure all vehicle occupants in their seats and/or safety seat. Plan your route ahead of time and let your hosts know when you expect to arrive. Be patient. Don’t let aggressive driving ruin this time of celebration. Don’t drink and drive. Oregon State Police will be on special patrol to enforce the seat belt/child restraint, DUII and speed limit laws.
