Woods sets state shot put mark ASHLAND -- Jackie Woods set a state-best mark in the shot put in the Ashland junior's first action of the year during a Southern Oregon Conference dual meet against Klamath Union Thursday. Woods, who initially did not turn out for track this season, tossed the shot 41 feet, 9 inches. Woods had a change of mind and has been working out with the Grizzlies for the past two weeks. She needs to participate in two meets and have at least one mark in an event to be eligible for the district meet. Ashland has one more meet remaining -- Tuesday at Grants Pass -- prior to the district meet. "It's unusual," admitted Ashland coach Bob Julian, about an athlete showing up so late in the season. "She realized it was a big mistake. She wanted to come out and help the team." The Grizzlies dropped both sides of the dual meet to Klamath Union. The Pelican boys defeated Ashland 76-69, while the KU girls won 77-68. Both teams did not put some of their top performers in their primary events to get ready for Saturday's Grants Pass Rotary meet. Woods, who finished second in the shot at district last year, won the 400 (1:03.1), finished second in the long jump (15-3) and placed fourth in the 200 (28.6).
