Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 10, 2005 Ashland considers Lincoln uses Proposals for school building include Community Works, Waldorf programs By JENNIFER SQUIRES for the Mail Tribune ASHLAND — Proposals to use Lincoln School for Waldorf and Community Works programs will be considered by the Ashland School Board during its meeting today. The board also will hear updates on the feasibility of starting a kindergarten-through-eighth-grade alternative school and expanding the district’s kindergarten program. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 1185 E. Main St. The board will decide whether it will continue discussions with Siskiyou School, the local Waldorf program, and review the first formal request from Community Works to use part of the school for its Lithia Springs School for at-risk youth. Siskiyou School requests up to 10 classrooms and use of the cafeteria, kitchen, gymnasium, teachers’ lounge, bathrooms and hallways. The program will pay a monthly lease of $6,000 in addition to utility costs. Advertisement The Community Works proposal asks for 10,000 to 15,000 square feet — in particular, the lower wing that includes the gymnasium — and would move Lithia Springs School into the building within 18 months. Community Works would like to sign a five-year lease with an option for a five-year renewal. The proposal, a one-page letter from Community Works Executive Director Arnie Green, does not include the cost of the lease. Maintaining the historic building for education and expanding district programs to occupy at least a portion of Lincoln were identified as priorities at a Sept. 21 community meeting about its future. The K-8 committee will report its findings to the school board. The committee was formed almost a year ago to explore creating an alternative elementary and middle school program. Prospective members of the kindergarten committee will be confirmed. The school board established the committee at a Sept. 27 meeting to study potential changes to the kindergarten program for this school year and the 2006-07 year.
