"We couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn tonight," Dixon said after his Phoenix High boys basketball team shot 32 percent from the field but nevertheless beat Lakeview, 51-36, at home Tuesday night. The victory was the Pirates’ ninth straight and upped their record to 11-6 overall and 7-0 in the Skyline Conference, where they have a one-game lead on second-place Mazama. Senior post Brady Rhodes paced Phoenix with 13 points and eight rebounds. Senior post Chuck Crockett came off the bench to add 10 points and six rebounds, and a third senior post, Trace Barrett, chipped in with eight rebounds and a fine defensive effort. "Barrett played great defense ... and helped us hold their big post (Logan Sheridan) to four points," Dixon said. "Crockett played a great game off the bench." Junior wing Martin Gonzalez also had 13 points for the Pirates, while Garrett Childress was the high man for the Honkers (1-6 Skyline) with 13. The Chieftains (5-11, 2-5 Skyline) held a 39-30 lead entering the fourth quarter, only to have Illinois Valley storm back to within 46-45. But Rogue River closed out the victory by making 10-of-14 free throws in the final period. Junior post J.T. Vaughn grabbed 11 rebounds for the Chieftains, while junior guard Tyler Mikels scored 17 points for the Cougars (2-5 Skyline). ILLINOIS VALLEY (53) — Loock 3, B.
