One will be serving his second stint in two years. Ed Cobb of Medford and James Sollee of Central Point, both reservists from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 18, will serve overseas for nine months to a year. Cobb, 40, a street-department employee who returned last year from a similar deployment, left Saturday. Water-crew worker Sollee, 43, left Tuesday. Both men took leave from work at the end of June, using their vacations to spend time with their families before deployment. Neither was available for comment. Public Works Director Bob Pierce reported the deployments to the City Council last week. He said department officials would reconfigure existing positions and seek temporary employees to fill in for the men in their absence. Battalion 18 is headquartered in Fort Lewis, Wash., and maintains 14 detachments across seven states, including Oregon, Alaska, California, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Nevada. Naval Mobile Construction Battalions provide construction support to the Navy, Marine Corps and other forces, construct base facilities and conduct defensive operations. In addition to working on wood, steel, masonry and concrete construction projects, the battalions also drill wells and repair battle damage, according to Battalion 18's Web site.
