Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 27, 2005 No. 11 Raiders capture opener LEWISTON, Idaho — Southern Oregon University's balanced offensive attack helped the 11th-ranked Raiders emerge with a pair of victories at the season-opening NAIA Region I Challenge Friday. The two-time defending Cascade Conference champions won a five-game thriller against Frontier Conference champion Carroll College in the afternoon, then followed with a 30-20, 30-21, 30-24 sweep of tourney host Lewis-Clark State College. Against the Fighting Saints, the Raiders squandered a two-games-to-none lead and had to rebound from 15-14 and 16-15 deficits in the fifth and deciding frame before sealing a 30-23, 30-18, 17-30, 25-30, 18-16 victory. Sophomore hitter Shanna Claflin's jump serve ace followed by a Carroll attack error closed out the match. All 12 SOU players received court time against the Warriors, who were limited to a .058 attack efficiency compared to SOU's chipper .361 pace (47-for- 108). Sophomore hitter Jaclyn Hamilton-Smith led Southern with 20 kills in the two matches, while senior middle Nicholette Le Bel contributed 19, junior hitter Rachael Baran posted 18, and Claflin finished with 17. Winners of eight straight contests against regional competition, the Raiders cap the two-day, eight-team affair today against Westminster, Utah and MSU- Northern.
