I recall some promises from the city about fixing the fountain, but every time I go through the park, I just see a boy and his dog, but no water. Am I all wet, or was the fountain supposed to have been fixed? — Forrest L., Medford You are an acute observer of downtown Medford, Forrest. Many of us at Since You Asked headquarters have passed the fountain and not given it a second thought. In 2013, the city spent $250,000 on Alba Park restorations, located across from City Hall and the Jackson County Courthouse. At the time, the plan was to rebuild the fountain and finally give that dog something to drink. Dedicated in 1934, the Italian-marble fountain features a small pool and a statue of a boy and two cocker spaniels. It originally was designed to be a dog fountain, but a fence later was added to keep children out of the pool. We checked in with Greg McKown, facilities manager for the city of Medford, to find out why the fountain hadn’t been repaired. He said that during the Alba Park restoration, the electrical and plumbing systems were determined to be beyond repair and not code compliant. Unfortunately, the fountain requires such an extensive restoration that it would have been beyond the budget of the park renovation in 2013, he said. The city’s 2016-17 budget does not include plans to repair the fountain. McKown said the city does plan to include the fountain rehabilitation in its 2017-18 budget.
