The nonprofit group gave Jim Coonan Jr. of Portland and his mother, Lurline Coonan, who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, the award in recognition of their commitment to land conservation, according to Executive Director Diane Garcia. Earlier this year, the Coonan family donated a conservation easement to the group to forever preserve and protect 1,660 acres of their 9,000-acre ranch located 20 miles east of Medford. The easement means the forested area on the ranch will always be managed in an environmentally friendly way, explained Garcia. The ranch, which borders both sides of Highway 140, includes the North Fork and South Fork of Little Butte Creek as well as numerous other creeks, pasturelands and forestlands. Jim Sr. and Lurline Coonan began purchasing land for the ranch in 1963. They raised cattle and bred and trained quarter horses for many years. The senior Coonan, who died in 1993, and his wife stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy environment across the land, their son Jim Jr. told the Mail Tribune earlier this year. "The conservation easement is an important part of the sustainability we want for our forestland," said the Portland businessman. "It makes good business sense, and it's good for the beauty of the property." Coonan, who spent the summers of his youth working on the ranch, said the family wants to continue harvesting timber from it but make sure it's done in a responsible, sustaining manner. Since the land conservation group formed in 1978 to help protect local farms and forests, it has obtained conservation easements on 4,229 acres in southwestern Oregon.
