PREP ROUNDUP Panthers claim first SWC triumph Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 11, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Apr. 11, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News In a doubleheader in which both games went to the last out, the South Medford baseball team claimed it’s first Southwest Conference victory in a doubleheader split with Thurston Friday at Harry & David Field. The Panthers’ Christian Mahoney singled home Brandon Letendre with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Panthers a 3-2 victory in the opener. The Colts won the nightcap, 1-0. With Game 1 knotted 2-all, Letendre opened the seventh with a single to center field, and after one out, Nick Henry advanced Letendre to second base. The Panthers’ Ryan Carle reached base on a throwing error that moved Letendre to third, setting up Mahoney’s hit to left field. Letendre pitched the distance, allowing nine hits, striking out five and walking one. He, Mahoney and Hunter Bradford had two hits apiece. In the nightcap, Thurston pitcher Cade Bates received run support in the top of the seventh inning to get the best of the Panthers’ Jack Thompson in a pitchers’ duel. In the top of the seventh, a throwing error to first base by Panther’s catcher allowed David Travelstead to score from third to make it 1-0. In the bottom of the seventh, South’s Will Cooney doubled to lead off and made third on Letendre’s ground out. Alex Bylund hit a one-hopper to first base, and Letendre broke for home but was caught in a rundown and tagged for the second out. After Matt DeVries singled to move Bylund to second with two outs, Henry struck out to end the game. Cooney had two hits for the Panthers (2-9, 1-5 SWC).
