Operation Hero Miles was signed into law on Oct. 28, 2004, by President Bush, allowing those serving in Iraq or Afghanistan to fly home on leave for free, thanks to donated frequent flyer miles. Basically, it permits the Department of Defense to accept the donated frequent flyer miles. Advertisement In the first six months of the program, some 540 million miles were donated. That’s enough for 22,000 free tickets. Those wanting to donate their mileage to America West Airlines can call 800-247-5691, Delta at 800-325-3999 and Northwest at 800-327-2881.
