North topples GP in soccer GRANTS PASS - It was the tale of two halves Friday for the North Medford boys soccer team. Grants Pass jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the break but the Black Tornado responded with two second-half goals for a 2-1 win in Southern Oregon Conference play. "We probably played the worst half of the year," said North coach Rich Garcia, referring to the first half. "We could have easily been down 5-0. It was total domination by Grants Pass." Nevertheless, the Black Tornado improved to 5-1-2 overall and remained unbeaten in the SOC at 3-0. Grants Pass got on the board just 50 seconds into the contest with a goal by Paul Allen off an assist by Josh Swanburg. But the Cavemen missed several opportunities and could never build on the lead. Stern words by Garcia at halftime and second-half goals by Dan Torrey and Leo Cabrera helped snap North Medford out of its doldrums. Torrey shoved in the tying score off a corner kick about eight minutes into the second half. Cabrera finished things off nine minutes later off an assist by Kedric Charlton. "I could have just thrown the first 30 minutes away," said Garcia. "But, you get that first goal and things start to roll for you. We should have lost this game." North goalkeeper David Oliver was busy in the net, snuffing out eight of the Cavemen's 14 shots on goal. Skyline A Volleybal BUTTE FALLS 10-15-15, NEW HOPE CHRISTIAN 15-3-4 - At Grants Pass, New Hope Christian served out a opening-game win, but Butte Falls rallied to take the Skyline A victory. Senior Jessica Dunlap had four service aces and tied for the team lead in digs with Brianna Smeltz with 10. Asia Million banged out 12 kills and setter Krystle Rowley had 13 assists. The Loggers improved to 8-4 overall and 5-0 in the Skyline A Southern Division. � PROSPECT 15-16, PAISLEY 7-14 - At Prospect, Christine Emmons had seven kills and four blocks as Prospect rallied for the Skyline A victory. Paisley held a 14-13 lead in the decisive match, but the Cougars rallied and Sarah Gordon finalized the win with the game-winning point. Gordon had eight kills and Lacey Tallman added seven for Prospect (5-2, 4-2 Sky A). Teammate Hillary Lewis had nine assists. Water Polo ASHLAND SWEEPS - At Ashland, the Grizzly boys and girls water polo teams continued their undefeated seasons with victories over Marist. Senior Brad Scoles posted five goals, four assists and six steals to lead the boys, 5-0, to a 16-2 rout. Tyler Foley, Aaron Nelson and Nathan Jessop each added two goals, and goalie Kyle Asher had nine blocked shots in goal. The girls, 5-0, were led by senior Elisa Jessop's three goals and two assists in a 8-3 win over Marist. Leela Brightenburg had two goals and three steals, and the Grizzlies got one goal each from Keely Zodrow, Tami Brown and Lila Little.
