Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 24, 2006 Since You Asked Tests show mercury in fish In regard to the article about mercury found in smallmouth bass at Emigrant Lake, my question is, can you tell if the fish are contaminated when you catch them? If the fish looks healthy, can it be eaten safely? — Jeff B. Ashland Sorry, Jeff. The only way to tell what level of mercury contamination any individual fish has is in a lab test. They don’t smell or look any different from fish that are safe to eat. The Department of Human Services last week issued an advisory for most people, especially women of child-bearing age, to avoid fish from Emigrant Lake after tests revealed unhealthy levels of mercury in smallmouth bass.
