LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, April 22 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 22, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 22, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Textbook poisons the well Editor's Note: A guest opinion in Sunday's paper by Joel Marks objected to the advanced placement history textbook adopted by the Medford School District. Because of an email issue, a portion of the opinion was omitted. Here is the omitted portion: The book is long and complicated, and though there are many beautiful bells and whistles, in the final accounting this book poisons the well of American history. There is no doubt the people of America, north, south, east and west, feel our constitutional rights are being eroded and we are slowly and sometimes quickly losing our history and heritage. The Medford School Board on April 6 unfortunately helped in that erosion. If, as some board members said, you leave this up to the teachers' discretion, why purchase over $200,000 worth of books with a pessimistic attitude toward the greatest country in the history of God's green earth? Kudos to Board Members Kim Wallan and Larry Nicholson. Under pressure from various quarters, Wallan in particular stood her ground, calling for changes in the editorializing of the Second Amendment. But why should she have to be forced to stand her ground in a phony editorializing of the Constitution by the writers and publishers of this book, which is used all over the fruited plain? This generation of young people is the anointed generation to save the republic, or it may not be. They need to know the original success formula put in place by inspired men and, yes, women. It was Abigail Adams who told her patriot husband John to hold fast to freedom. Will we do as John and Abigail did? May God grant that it be so. Joel Marks Medford Save our trees Trees are living! The City of Trees 2015 sign is posted at Stewart and Barnett. Quite the contrary, healthy trees are being cut down in our city at an alarming rate. "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein is celebrating 50 years! The gifts of the life giving trees are astounding and yet they ask nothing in return. Earth Share highlights the benefits of our trees. They say, "More people experience heart disease and respiratory ailments where trees have been removed! A tree can absorb as much as 48 pounds of CO2 a year and sequester one ton of CO2 by the time it's 40!” When smog alerts from smoke or winter inversions come it’s important to remember these facts. Try finding a shade tree at our shopping center now. Parks were meant to have old-growth trees for the health of the city. Look at Central Park, it's like the heart of health in the middle of clogged arteries! Trees are also a water filtration system that process two-thirds of our world water supply. Just look at a mudslide where homes are and trees once stood. Arbor Day is coming up. Save our trees! Give our children hope! In the same election, Lilia Caballero, running for Medford School Board Position 7, possesses in common with Karen an extensive history of service in both school and community organizations and a passion for doing all she can in the best interest of our students.
