Eagle Point pounds previously unbeaten Phoenix Pirates, 11-1 EAGLE POINT -- The Eagle Point baseball team may have found its groove just in time for Southern Oregon Conference season. The Eagles won just four of nine non-conference games, but they got the job done against a hard-hitting Phoenix team Wednesday. The Eagles bounced back from a lackluster 10-3 loss to Henley on Tuesday, walloping previously unbeaten Phoenix, 11-1, in six innings. Left-hander Jesse Stevenson went the distance, striking out eight while yielding only five singles. "I'm really proud of the way the kids bounced back from Tuesday's loss," Eagle Point coach Tom Britton said. "I hadn't thought we had played to our potential so far this season but today we executed well." The Eagles pulled away with a big third inning. Stevenson capped a six-run third inning with a three-run double as the Eagles extended their lead to 8-0. The Pirates (3-1) loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but failed to score. Jake Kleker went 3-for-3 with three RBIs for Eagle Point, while Stevenson added two hits and four RBIs. Ryan Garrett also stroke a pair of hits to go along with two runs. Nick Newmann had a two-bagger and a single and drove in four runs for the Eagles. "It's nice to see the kids break out and score some runs," Britton said. "I hope it's something we can look forward to in the future." GRANTS PASS 10-11, MARSHFIELD 0-1 At Coos Bay, Grants Pass left-hander Mike Sammis tossed a five-inning no-hitter as the Cavemen improved to 5-0 with a pair of five-inning triumphs. Sammis struck out seven and walked three. He also 5-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader. Derrick Draper was 3-for-3 in the first game for the Cavemen. Softball NORTH MEDFORD LOSES TWO -- At Eugene, fifth-ranked North Medford continued to get good pitching, but the Black Tornado's offensive blackout and errant defense led to two losses. No. 2 North Eugene defeated North Medford, 1-0, in nine innings and Barlow of Gresham prevailed, 3-1, as the Tornado fell to 2-4. Steph Coe blanked North Eugene for eight innings before the Highlanders cashed in on the international rule in the bottom of the ninth. The international rule puts the ninth hitter due to the plate on second base to start an inning. Jamie Carlson was the runner for North Eugene. She advanced to third on an infield out and then scored on Becky Weston's suicide squeeze. Sophomore pitcher Amy Harris, who beat the Tornado in last year's Class 4A state semifinals, struck out 11. Against Barlow, the Tornado had the go-ahead run thrown out at the plate in the fifth inning then surrendered two unearned runs in the top of the sixth. The Indians scored three times in the second inning highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles by Lindsey O'Byrne and Nataly Tatone. Tatone, O'Byrne, Shannon Burmeister and Shellee Black each had two hits to lead Roseburg, who improved to 6-2 on the season. Autumn Bell went 2-for-4 to lead the Cougars (2-0-1), whose pitching staff fanned nine Eagle Point batters. The Eagles failed to record a strikeout but limited Illinois Valley to five hits. Connie McGonagle and Ginny Hoye each had two hits to lead Eagle Point.
