BASKETBALL Berger signs with professional German team By Dan Jones Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Dan Jones Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 8, 2015 @ 7:29 pm By Dan Jones Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 8, 2015 @ 7:29 pm » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Danny Berger’s dreams are beginning to come true. The former North Medford and collegiate basketball standout signed to play professionally with Germany’s Ehingen Urspring on Thursday. The 25-year-old guard/forward wrapped up his final year of college basketball at BYU-Hawaii, where he averaged 13 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists during the 2014-15 season. He had transferred from Utah State, where he gained national notoriety after he collapsed from cardiac arrest and stopped breathing during a practice on Dec. 4, 2012. Berger was revived on the scene, but had to sit out the remainder of the 2012-13 season after having a permanent defibrillator inserted in his chest. Now he’s happy, healthy and whole, with some understandable nerves as he prepares to venture off alone and live abroad. Berger’s contract with Ehingen is for one year and allows him to transfer after the conclusion of the 2015-16 season, which begins in September. Berger will fly to Germany from Utah on Friday. “It’s a big commitment,” said Berger. “I had to think about it for a while. I didn’t want to look back in 10 years and wish I would have done it, and I know I would have done that.” Ehingen will play in the ProB, the third German division behind the BBL and ProA. The club was in ProA last season but went 6-24 overall and finished in last place out of 16 teams. Ehingen saw film of the 6-foot-7, 195-pound Berger (http://tinyurl.com/ozr8fot) and contacted him through social media. He had also played in the Worldwide Invitational Camp in Las Vegas, July 12-14. That event gives exposure to players interested in linking up with international squads. Berger spoke with a team representative for about 1½ hours on Skype last month before mulling over the decision and securing an agent. He had considered coaching after graduating, but said he’s always dreamed of playing professionally. And now he’ll get his chance, with hopes of rising up by proving himself. “I’m willing to go places and it’ll be a great opportunity to travel,” he said. Ehingen is young and may look to Berger for some leadership, he said. He’ll likely play at shooting guard and small forward. In ProB, three German players must always be on the court, he said. The team begins practice on Aug. 15. Along with his player’s salary, Berger’s housing, food and travel expenses are covered by the club.
