Minor, York help Cavemen storm past Black Tornado GRANTS PASS - Brant Minor and Tyler York provided the offensive punch for Grants Pass on Tuesday night. The senior duo combined for 40 points as the Cavemen rolled past North Medford 80-55 at Heater-Newman Memorial Gym. Minor tallied a game-high 26 points, while York canned four 3-pointers and ended with 14 points. "They really didn't have anybody to match up with Brant," Grants Pass coach Bill Cowell said. "He got most of the shots tonight. Brant scored from the inside and Tyler had a good game from the outside." Zach Taylor paced North Medford with 13 points, while senior post Gabe Burchfiel added 10 points and 13 rebounds. "Burchfiel played hard and shot the ball well," said Cowell. The Cavemen (17-4, 9-3 SOC) led by nine points at the end of the first quarter. The Black Tornado (6-15, 3-9 SOC) cut the margin to 26-20 in the second period before Grants Pass ended the half on a 16-3 run. Then the Cavemen built an insurmountable, 64-34 lead going into the final period. Grants Pass outrebounded North, 44-33. "We executed our half-court offense really well and played good defense," said Cowell. "North hung in there and played hard the whole night." Black Tornado starting sophomore post Ryan Lucas missed the game due to illness. JV result - Grants Pass won. ROSEBURG 63, ASHLAND 58 - At Ashland, Roseburg kept pace in the race for the SOC's second state-playoffs seed by surviving Ashland's 3-point barrage. The Indians (9-3 SOC) used 26 points from senior center Joe Newton to ward off the Grizzlies' season-high 11 strikes from beyond the arc. Ashland (5-17 overall, 1-11) got 22 points from junior guard Bryan Clevenger, including 5 3's, and 20 points from Nick Palmesano, featuring 6 3's. After losing by 30 at Roseburg earlier this season, the Grizzlies were within three, at 53-50, in the fourth quarter and had possession, but a turnover quelled the rally. The Pelicans (7-5 SOC) have a one-game lead on Crater (6-6 SOC) for the league's fourth and final state-playoffs spot with two conference contests remaining. The Eagles (2-20 overall, 1-11) were undone by 27 turnovers. Junior wing Tim Martinen scored a team-high 11 points, and junior post Jacob Goodson teamed 12 rebounds with nine points. KU was led by sophomore wing Jacob Wynn's 14 points.
