Tyler James Leventon, 26, of the 2100 block of Brookhurst Drive, admitted Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court to crashing into a fence at Medford Fire Station 5 near Roberts Road and North Keene Way in Medford while he was impaired by alcohol. A 9- and 10-year-old were injured by debris caused by the accident. According to Deputy District Attorney Nick Geil, Leventon swerved onto a sidewalk, nearly hitting the victims directly. He continued driving until he parked his truck in his driveway. Leventon claimed he "blacked out" at the time of the crash. He said he remembers entering the truck and then pulling into his driveway. Although his vehicle showed damage and vegetation on its front end, Leventon told Circuit Court Judge Lorenzo Mejia that he didn't notice it. Police knocked on Leventon's door later that evening, and he answered with bloodshot eyes and had alcohol on his breath, Geil said. Geil read a letter written by one of the child victims, who sat in court with her family. The girl moved in closer to her mother for comfort. "You made me feel like I was going to die," the girl wrote, adding that she's afraid of cars. According to Leventon's attorney, Yaschar Sarparast, his client was working long hours in construction and wasn't managing his Type 1 diabetes when he drank after work. Sarparast said it's unclear how much of Leventon's impairment was caused by alcohol and how much by blood sugar. "I am terribly sorry for the trauma I've put them through," Leventon said. "I'm doing everything I can to right this wrong." Leventon's father addressed the court and apologized to the victims with tears in his eyes. "We support our son. We don't support what he did," he said. Leventon pleaded guilty to a felony charge of failing to perform the duties of a driver and misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants and recklessly endangering another person. Mejia addressed the young victim prior to sentencing Leventon. "I'm sorry you're afraid of cars," Mejia said. "Frankly I'm a little afraid of cars, too." He sentenced Leventon to 30 days in jail, three years of probation and a one-year revocation of his driver's license.
