Food drive with ACCESS begins today Getting food donations for the needy has been a particularly difficult task for ACCESS Food Share thus far this year. "We have gotten only about half the food in drives that we are used to," says manager Ben Benjamin. He says rain dampened their first major effort, the Boy Scout pickup earlier this month. While last year's Boy Scout drive netted 30,000 pounds of food, this year's brought in only about 14,900. In today's Mail Tribune, there's another chance to help someone in need. Donors can fill the enclosed grocery bag with food or mail a donation in the envelope provided. "If folks can respond well, we'll be in great shape for the winter and spring," Benjamin says. The food drive lasts throughout December. Bags can be dropped off at any fire station in the county, Benjamin says. They can also be dropped off at five local churches: Ascension Lutheran at 2617 E. Barnett Road in Medford from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. In Lidgate Hall behind Medford Congregational at 1801 E. Jackson St. First Christian at 1900 Crater Lake Ave. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday. St. Peter's Lutheran at 1020 E. Main St. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Westminster Presbyterian at 2000 Oakwood Drive from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Bags call also be dropped off at Sherm's Thunderbird and Food 4 Less in Medford. Benjamin says anyone who doesn't get a bag and wants to donate can bring a regular grocery bag from home.
