James Thurman Nunley Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 5, 2014 at 2:00 AM Posted Nov. 5, 2014 at 2:00 AM » Social News James Thurman Nunley left us to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, October 27, 2014. Jim passed peacefully with his family at his bedside at Valley Care Medical Center, in Pleasanton, Calif. We give thanks that his suffering from the ravages of colon cancer is over. Jim was born October 12, 1952 in Medford, Ore. to Walter and Marjorie Nunley; he was the second oldest of eight children, and was raised in a loving Christian home. The rural life characterized Jim's boyhood working on the family ranch, milking cows, tending livestock, building fences, baling hay, fixing equipment, and all the other chores every farmboy knows. He was a fun-loving, exuberant youth (personality traits that did not disappear in adulthood) who thrived on the out-of-doors recreations of fishing, hunting, horseback riding, and just plain adventuring. He could be accurately described as the family cut-up, with a mischievous sense of humor and ever-ready grin. Jim was educated in public schools in Southern Oregon. He earned his way though college doing custom hay work with his brother and spending several summers as a commercial fisherman in Alaska, working both as a deckhand and later as ship's cook. He also worked on a crew surveying for the Alaska oil pipeline. Always the entertaining story-teller, Jim would return from these northern ventures with many tales of the colorful characters he'd encountered. Jim received his Bachelor's degree from Oregon State University, and his physical therapy degree from the Forest Grove campus of Pacific University. It was around this time in his life that this previously rather indifferent student became a serious and avid reader of all aspects of the humanities, especially political thought, philosophy, and theology. Following graduation, Jim worked for a while as a physical therapist in Astoria, Ore. and in 1985 he moved to the East Bay area of California, continuing his PT work until shortly before his death. He was a talented mechanic who could fix almost anything, and continued to find contentment and relaxation in nature, pursuing the hobbies he'd always enjoyed. Jim was an assistant scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts, and relished hiking with the troop. During Logan's high school years, Jim helped coach the wrestling team, and became quite passionate about the sport he himself had participated in during his own school days. Our brother was a strong committed Christian who lived his faith every day. He was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Livermore, serving as an elder. In his work, he touched many lives not just through the physical therapy he provided, but especially by witnessing his faith to his patients. The last nineteen years of his life were utterly devoted to his son Logan who Jim loved so dearly. Jim's certainty and hope in Jesus Christ never wavered; the calm acceptance with which he faced his impending earthly death was exalting to those who knew him, and a wonderment to those who didn't. Jim is survived by his brother, David Nunley of Chico, Calif.; sisters, Elizabeth Nunley of Seeley Lake, Mont.; Krista Codington of Grants Pass, Ore., Ellen Demarest of Corvallis, Ore., Kathryn Carlson of Tigard, Ore., and Sharman Johnson of Ft. Collins, Colo. He is also survived by his son, Logan Slater; and 25 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Marjorie Nunley; and his brother, Brett Frederick Nunley. All who wish to attend the funeral service are welcome. Service will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday November 7, 2014 at Our Savior Lutheran in Livermore, Calif. Contributions may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Ministries in Jim's name. Arrangements are being handled by Graham-Hitch funeral home in Danville, Calif.
