When are the whales heading north? It seems to me it was around the spring break last year. I don’t want to miss them this year. — J. R., Medford. Folks who time it just right often come back with a whale of a tale, J.R. And you’re timing is just about right, according to Mike Rivers, whale watch week volunteer coordinator for the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. March 22 launches the annual spring whale watch week along the coast, Rivers reported. Last spring there were 3,263 whale sightings, the fifth most spotted in 17 years of record keeping, River said. The most spring sightings was 5,030 in 1990, he said. Whale watch week coincides with the northern migration of the gray whales from lagoons in Mexico to Arctic Alaska, he said.
