Smoke from the Stouts and Cable Crossing fires in Douglas County poured southward into the valley Friday and Saturday, pushing air quality into the unhealthful categories for local residents. The smoke reached "very unhealthy" levels in Medford at 4 p.m. Saturday, with the air quality index hitting 248, according to the state Department of Environmental Quality. Good quality air measures zero to 50 on the index, while the hazardous level kicks in at 300. Medford's highest reading in the past 24 hours was 328. Shady Cove's air rated an "unhealthy" label at 9 p.m. Saturday, while Grants Pass was listed as moderate at 61 on the index. Meanwhile, upper level winds blowing northwest out of California are carrying higher level smoke from the Forks Complex fire into Curry County and western Josephine County. There are several fires burning in Northern California, including the Forks Complex east of Eureka. On its Facebook page, the Medford office of the National Weather Service said a shift in the weather pattern isn't expected until later next week, with the smoke expected to be present in the area until that time.
