Challengers roll into state quarterfinals Friday Oct 28, 2016 at 2:00 AM Oct 29, 2016 at 10:31 PM The second-seeded Cascade Christian volleyball team cruised past 15th seed Scio, 25-8, 25-15, 25-8, in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs at Cascade Christian High on Saturday. The Challengers, who are second to Glide in the OSAA power rankings, will next face 10th-seeded Coquille in the eight-team state tournament at 10 a.m. Friday at Forest Grove High. The Red Devils topped seventh-seeded Rainier in a five-set thriller on Saturday. Claire Hawkins had 10 kills, Caroline McMahon and Eeklyn Magee recorded seven kills apiece and Allison Winter chipped in 30 assists and seven aces for Cascade Christian (28-1), which is making its fifth appearance in the postseason in the past six years. Kaylee Cannon added four aces, Karisa Waldron six kills and Gabby Burton five kills for the Challengers, who have won eight straight. "Our big thing was to just maintain our energy," Cascade Christian head coach Rob Kleker said. "When we are playing fast and playing loose, we are usually playing well." The Loggers finished the year 12-11. GLIDE 3, ST. MARY'S 0: At Glide, top-seeded Glide won the first-round Class 3A state playoff match, 25-15, 25-6, 25-12. Hallie Shean had two kills and two aces for the 16th-seeded Crusaders (16-15), who only missed four serves in the match. Ashley Rietmann added eight assists against the Wildcats (23-2). HOOD RIVER VALLEY 3, ASHLAND 0: At Hood River, eighth-seeded Hood River Valley won the first-round Class 5A state playoff match, 25-22, 25-18, 25-22. Myla Norvell had 12 kills and 12 digs, Alex Crane seven kills and Julia Senestraro seven digs for ninth-seeded Ashland (12-7), which had won four straight. Stella Bungay chipped in three aces and Soleil Heller 21 assists and six digs against the Eagles (24-4). Football ST. MARY'S 49, ILLINOIS VALLEY 7: St. Mary's senior Thys Kuitert passed for five touchdowns as the Crusaders claimed the Southern Cascade League's second and final playoff berth at Spiegelberg Stadium. Kuitert went 8-for-9 for 255 yards, and senior Bryce Bramscher had four catches for 153 yards and three TDs for St. Mary's (6-3, 2-1 SCL), set to make its first appearance in the postseason in 22 years. The Crusaders led 42-0 at halftime against Illinois Valley (1-7, 0-3). The Rams (9-4-2) led 2-0 at halftime against 23rd-seeded North Medford (6-7-2). Jose Gallegos had a couple good scoring looks for the Black Tornado. Girls Soccer BEAVERTON 2, NORTH MEDFORD 1, OT: At Beaverton, 15th-seeded Beaverton edged No. 18 North Medford in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs. Savannah Bumgardner scored using a Meghan Cowan assist in the 53rd minute to put the Black Tornado (5-4-6) ahead 1-0. The Beavers (10-4-1) responded with goals in the 71st and 84th minutes. ASHLAND 2, SOUTH ALBANY 1: At Ashland, Ashland advanced to the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs with the play-in victory. Lily Annen attempted a shot that bounced off a South Albany defender and into the net to give the Grizzlies the go-ahead score in the 60th minute. The match was tied at 1 at halftime after Chanel Garcia tallied in the 20th minute for the Rebels (6-8) and Ashland's Sinead Pyle answered nine minutes later with a long free kick that made it in after a South Albany defender tried unsuccessfully to clear it. Goalkeeper Taylor Buckley-McGinnis made eight saves for the Grizzlies (10-4-1), who will next play Tuesday on the road.
