Is anything being done to cut them off before they become a real problem? — Jason K., Talent   Yes, Jason, brown marmorated stink bugs are still on the crawl here and there is no viable control at the moment. Rick Hilton, an entomologist at the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center on Hanley Road, tells us that the stink bug has been detected in nearly every town in the region. The danger posed by these stinkers is potentially devastating to nut and fruit crops. "I've been watching closely," Hilton said. "Ashland is the worst place right now. We're just waiting for them to get out to orchards and vineyards; it's already happening in the Willamette Valley." Hilton said it took about 15 years for the brown marmorated stink bug to move from cities to agriculture areas in Atlantic Coast states, but evidence in the Northwest indicates a faster spread. "It seems to be happening faster and faster," Hilton said. "They were in the Portland area 10 years before it became a problem in the vineyards and orchards." When a brown marmorated stink bug injects salivary enzymes, the damage may not be seen at first, but it renders nuts unmarketable and its impact on peaches and apples can show up weeks later when the fruit is brought out of storage and in stores. "Unfortunately, there are no real good options to fight the bugs," Hilton said. "We've done a lot of testing, including bringing native parasites from China to see if they will attack the stink bugs. But we don't want them attacking our native stink bugs. When you bring parasites in form another place you have to be very careful so that they don't start attacking other things."
