"It was a continuation of the same fire," Battallion Chief Kurt Bennett said. Embers will continue to smolder for days in the fine sawdust although a fire brigade at Sierra Pine has been hauling out material trying to extinguish any possible flare ups. Bennett said the sawdust piles are about 25 feet deep, making it difficult to find the hot spots. Medford fire crews used thermal imaging cameras to locate the fire. When they broke into the wall, the rush of oxygen fed flames, which were quickly put out. Advertisement Bennett said fire crews spent about two hours Sunday night scanning the plant for any hot spots. Bennett said no cause was determined for the fire although the equipment used to process the sawdust sometimes gets contaminated with rocks or metal that can create sparks. Bennett said no monetary loss had been set.
