Memory issues can start in people in their 50s. How the brain stores memories is a very complex process. Most memories are stored in different parts of the brain, such as the area for visual memories, the occipital lobe. When one area of the brain is stimulated, it can then trigger stimulation of another area. For example, the odor of a certain delicacy that grandmother used to make on special occasions is detected in the olfactory area of the brain. Memory of this odor can then stimulate the visual area and you see an image of grandmother. As a person ages, some of those areas do not function as well resulting in a loss of the memories that were once stored there. But before discussing older people, younger people can also have a memory loss. In a National Institute of Mental Health study, a group of college students were tested regarding their recollections concerning a specific major event. Results showed that the students had fairly accurate recall 15 months after the event, but after 32 months only 33 percent remembered the event correctly. Another finding in that study was that students whose memories were the poorest expressed the greatest confidence in their recollections. As one gets older it’s not uncommon to forget where the car keys are or your uncle’s first name. If these lapses of memory continue, the specter of the Big A - Alzheimer’s disease - or the Big D – dementia - may enter your mind. A recent study was done to determine the significance of such memory losses in older individuals. At the start of the study, the 531 people in the study were intellectually normal and were followed for years. Each year, they were asked if they noticed any changes in their memory since their last visit. Fifty-six percent said they did. The group with memory problems were subsequently found to have an increased risk of mild intellectual impairment, a milder form of dementia. This impairment occurred about nine years after the memory changes started. Individuals with the Alzheimer gene or those who smoked developed intellectual impairment a faster rate. Tests are now available, some quite simple and others more involved, such as brain scans, to help determine if people with memory problems have an underlying serious neurological problem. Massachusetts-based Dr. Murray Feingold is the physician in chief of The Feingold Center for Children, medical editor of WBZ-TV and WBZ radio, and president of the Genesis Fund. The Genesis Fund is a nonprofit organization that funds the care of children born with birth defects, mental retardation and genetic diseases.
