Brandon Brice Boortz, 29, is being held in the Lane County Jail on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, unlawful entry to a motor vehicle, possession of burglary tools, possession of a stolen vehicle, two counts of identity theft and two counts of second-degree forgery. Boortz was arrested by Springfield police after he allegedly stole a woman's car in Lane County Wednesday, court records said. Earlier this week, Medford police had obtained images taken by a Walmart security camera of a man they later identified, with help from community tips, as Boortz. The man in the surveillance photo was fraudulently using a credit card that had been reported stolen along with a car, which was later recovered, Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. Budreau said that while Boortz doesn't have much of a local criminal history, he apparently has an extensive rap sheet in Shasta County, Calif., where sheriff's deputies reported in March that he was arrested in possession of a large quantity of methamphetamine. Court records show Boortz has two outstanding warrants in Jackson County for failure to appear on charges of first-degree theft and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He first appeared in Jackson County Circuit Court on those charges in February. In addition to those cases and the Lane County charges, Budreau said, Boortz likely will face Jackson County charges of unauthorized use of a vehicle and four counts of felony misuse of a credit card. Boortz is being held in Lane County without bail, jail records show.
