Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 17, 2005 Phoenix-Talents Matt Wiegand rounds second base during Tuesdays pool-play game at the Babe Ruth World Series in Louisiana. Late rally dooms locals ABBEVILLE, La. — With one mighty blast, Phoenix-Talent’s hopes of recording its initial victory at the 13-15-year-old Babe Ruth World Series were dashed. First baseman Phillip Wetherell smacked a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to give Effingham, Ill., a 6-3 victory in come-from- behind fashion Tuesday. The game-ending homer capped a five-run rally that lifted the Ohio Valley representative to its first victory in four attempts at the World Series. "We had this game," said Phoenix-Talent assistant coach Dwayne Robinson. "Boy, they just came back on us." Phoenix-Talent (28-4), the first Rogue Valley team to advance to the 13-15-year-old World Series since 1984, dropped to 0-3 in pool play at the 10-team tournament with one game remaining. Starting left-handed pitching ace Jordan Lewis breezed through the first five innings Tuesday before giving way to Cody Barrett in the sixth. Advertisement Barrett surrendered a run in his first inning of work but still entered the seventh with a 3-1 lead. In the final inning, however, Barrett found himself in trouble. The right-hander walked Danny Winkler, then gave up back-to-back singles to Ben Mehl and Tyler McKay that loaded the bases. Lewis re-entered and yielded a two-run double to Anthony Hecht to tie the game. Wetherell then sent the teams home with his decisive homer to left. "Jordan was pretty gassed," said Robinson. "He threw something like 120 pitches two days ago. He was pretty crushed, but he’s a warrior." Nick Workman gave Phoenix-Talent its first lead of the World Series in the first inning with an RBI single that scored Matt Wiegand from second. Ryan Robinson capped the two-run inning two batters later with another run-scoring hit. The same Workman-Wiegand connection struck again in the third to up the Phoenix-Talent advantage to 3-0. Entering Tuesday’s contest, Phoenix-Talent had just two hits and was outscored 21-1 over its first two games. "We told the guys they should expect plenty of curveballs today ‘cause we haven’t been hitting them," Dwayne Robinson said. "We got off to a nice start because I think the guys were motivated to give a better showing." Workman finished 3-for-4 to lead Phoenix-Talent’s seven-hit attack, while Wiegand scored two runs and was 2-for-4. Lewis struck out seven in five innings. Mitch Frey pitched one inning in relief of starter Darin Worman to record the win. Phoenix-Talent closes out pool play today against Middle Atlantic representative Syracuse, N.Y., which is 1-2 in pool play. Bracket play begins Thursday with the top three teams from each pool advancing. If Phoenix-Talent wins today there would be a three-way tie for the third and final playoff spot from the American Division. The tiebreaker, which Effingham would control, goes to the team that’s allowed the fewest runs over four games. "We’re pretty much out of it," Robinson said. "Our goal is to just keep after it and finish well (today)." Semifinal games are Friday and the championship contest will be played Saturday.
