Injuries and illness have worn the Panthers thin, but South persevered Thursday with a key 61-52 road win over Marist. South Medford (2-3) made 26 of 32 free throws and overcame an early injury to Marissa Towry to avenge a 62-61 defeat to the Spartans last season. "We really needed a win," said South coach Andrea Jaime. "We’re getting a little more confidence, and next week we’ll have our other post (Brittany Farrer, out with a stress fracture) back." It was an inauspicious start for the Panthers, losing Towry to a sprained ankle — she would later return — in the first five minutes of the game and falling behind 19-11 after the first quarter. Advertisement South was able to trim the lead to 27-22 at the half and outscored Marist 39-25 the rest of the way. The pressing Panthers forced numerous turnovers and collected 18 steals, and they shot 18-for-22 from the foul line in the second half. "We were more aggressive to the hoop and to their pressure (in the second half)," said Jaime. "We finished with only 11 team fouls and just seemed to play under control more on defense more than they did." Kelsey Corbin was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter and led South with 15 points and six assists. Katie Singler scored 14 to go with five steals and five rebounds. Towry finished with 14 points and Casey Martin, normally a guard that played post due to the thin bench, grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and displayed some tough defense.
