Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell Another theft ‘from the kids’ The second youth-baseball league theft in two weeks hits in White City as vandals make off with cash and goods By JACK MORAN Mail Tribune WHITE CITY — Cal Ripken youth baseball league officials worked all day Friday fixing and replacing what intruders broke and stole during a destructive overnight burglary. "The place was trashed," said league President Randi Fahndrich. "We all volunteer our time here, and this is a bummer." Sometime between 9 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. Friday, burglars ripped open a locked metal door at the league’s concession stand and stole from the building more than $2,000 worth of food and snacks, about $200 cash, and a microwave, Fahndrich said. Advertisement The intruders also made a mess of the building before fleeing the scene. Fahndrich said a fire extinguisher was emptied inside an ice machine, a soda machine was demolished and a toilet was filled with sand, causing it to overflow. "It was amazing — they ransacked the entire place," she said. To top it off, the burglars stole six sets of umpires’ gear from an announcer’s booth that was also broken into. Jackson County sheriff’s Sgt. Terry Larson said deputies are investigating the burglary, which occurred near a county-owned field off Kershaw Road. Anyone with information can call the sheriff’s department at 774-6800. Fahndrich can be reached at 821-8049. While the youth league’s regular season ended Friday, the ballpark plays host this weekend to an adult softball tournament. Fahndrich said the league’s board of directors decided to "put off a couple bills to get the concession up and running" for the 31-team tournament, which is expected to be a big money maker. "We’re doing all we can to make this work," Fahndrich said, adding that when the league is victimized, "(thieves) are really stealing from the kids." The 47-team Cal Ripken league is in its first year. Fahndrich said hundreds of boys and girls age 5 to 12 took to the diamond this year. This week’s break-in was the second time the Kershaw Road ballpark was victimized by intruders. Fahndrich said tools and equipment valued at about $1,000 were stolen from a shed about three weeks ago. Burglars and thieves have targeted several other youth baseball organizations in Jackson County this year. Just last weekend, a Gold Valley Little League concession stand was broken into, with intruders making off with about $1,500 in cash and supplies. A concession stand operated by Phoenix-Talent Little League officials was burgled in late March, a few days after thieves stole a set of metal bleachers from the Medford American Little League ballpark.
