The Grizzlies stayed close to Mount Hood Conference powerhouse Gresham but were worn down by the top-ranked Gophers’ service game during a 25-16, 25-16 defeat on Saturday at South Medford High. Tessa Maurer and Megan Beugli each had seven digs to lead the Grizzlies, with Beugli also registering a team-high four kills. Ashland held a 12-9 lead in Game 1 but, following a Grizzlies’ timeout, Gresham streaked to a 16-12 lead that it wouldn’t relinquish. The Grizzlies took out Phoenix, 25-18, 25-16 in the opening round, then ousted North Bend, 25-22, 20-25, 15-6. In the semifinals, Ashland defeated Roseburg, 25-21, 25-19. Among other local teams competing in the tournament: South Medford claimed seventh; Eagle Point was ninth; Crater took 10th; North Medford settled for 13th; Phoenix was 14th; and St. Mary’s earned the consolation bracket championship, good for 17th in the 24-team field. South Medford defeated archrival North Medford, 25-12, 25-11. Lakeview, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 3A, defeated Roseburg for third place, 25-15, 25-22. BUTTE FALLS SWEEPS — At Grants Pass, Butte Falls remained undefeated in Skyline A League Southern Division play with a two-match sweep of New Hope Christian. The Loggers won the first match, 25-9, 25-8, 25-8. In the second, they won 25-21, 25-17, 25-15. For the day, Butte Falls (8-1, 6-0 Sky A) got 13 aces and 27 assists from senior setter Krystle Rowley, 14 digs from junior hitter Asia Million, 12-of-24 hitting from junior outside hitter Kathi St. George and three blocks from junior middle Cassy Bartel. Skyline Football ILLINOIS VALLEY 28, HIDDEN VALLEY 6 — At Cave Junction, Illinois Valley rolled up 372 yards rushing to open the Skyline Conference with a win. Quarterback Gary Couch led the Cougars with 151 yards on 15 carries, while Mike Pagnotta added 81 yards on just eight attempts. Illinois Valley (2-1, 1-0 Skyline) limited Hidden Valley to 48 yards on the ground — including minus 3 in the second half. Sarah Martin scored the lone goal for North and Pam Curlee had three blocks. Nicole Fox led South Medford with three goals and Karen Kralik added during the Panthers’ win. Miranda Linville and Sarah Villeneuve scored for North (0-4), while T.K. Hanstien had nine blocks.
