Eagles breeze to championship at tournament EAGLE POINT - Eagle Point crowned seven champions and added five second-place finishes in breezing to the championship of the Eagle Point Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday. The Eagles finished with 425.5 points to easily outdistance Redmond, which totaled 238. Clackamas took third with 207.5 and South Medford was fourth with 127. Andrew Larsen led the way for the Eagles as he registered two victories, a technical fall and a 13-0 major decision over Hidden Valley's Keith Pedrick in the 125-pound title match. Joe Lewis also had a strong tourney for EP with two falls and two major decisions, including an 11-2 triumph over South Medford's Ian Rasmussen in the 119-pound championship bout. Other champions for the Eagles were Nick Alexander (103), Stephen Price (130), Dan Rullamas (140), Tyson Nelson (171) and Jake Phillips (189). "The varsity kids did a good job, but we were just as impressed with our JV kids," Eagle Point assistant coach Robbie Cowden said. "Our second-line guys scored a ton of points, and it's that sort of depth that carries you through in a tournament like this." Two of the Eagles' JV competitors - J.P. Sheile and Brock Olsen - advanced to the championship matches at 112 and 130, respectively. PHOENIX TAKES SECOND - At Eugene, Brian Murphy took home an individual title at 171 pounds to fuel Phoenix to a runner-up finish at the Willamette Wrestling Tournament. Thurston claimed the team title with 223.5 points while Phoenix registered 210. Chris Vote (130), George Pearce (140), Ryan Staten (145) and Nick Acord (160) all nabbed second-place showings for the Pirates. Kevin Cowley (119) and Jack King (152) added thirds. Swimming GRANTS PASS SWEEPS - At the Grants Pass YMCA, Grants Pass won both the boys and girls meets in a three-way, Southern Oregon Conference meet against North and South Medford. In the girls event, Grants Pass won with 132 points, followed by North's 112. Jamie Erickson won the 200- and 500-meter freestyles for North in 2 minutes, 7.30 seconds and 5:43.31, respectively. She also swam on the winning 200 medley relay with April Louie, Erin Kulmac and Chris Farnsworth. Kulmac won the 100 butterfly in 1:08.38. South got wins from Lynea Loeffler in the 100 backstroke (1:06.57) and Karen Kralik in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.60). Grants Pass won all but two boys events, scoring 129 points. For South, Kurt Vanderhoff won the 200 freestyle in 2:18.85. For North, Nick Stevenson claimed the 100 breast in 1:11.34. ALL-SKYLINE MEET - At Ashland, freshman Justin Heath was the lone Phoenix winner but the Pirate boys prevailed against four other Skyline Conference rivals and two smaller Klamath Falls schools at the Southern Oregon University pool. The Phoenix boys scored 79 points to 72 for runner-up North Valley. Henley (66) and Hidden Valley (61) also made strong showings. Heath won the 500-yard freestyle and finished second in the 200 freestyle in a school-record time of 1 minute, 55.20 seconds. The previous Phoenix record was 1:58.15. Other major contributors for the Phoenix boys came in third-place finishes by K.C. Cloyd (200 IM), Jacob Nelson (100 butterfly), Tony Byrd (50 free) and Jeff Stone (100 back). Hidden Valley's Mark Pepitone and Chris Ritter of Mazama each won two individual events. In the girls meet, Henley won the team title with 75 points, but only 13 points separated the Hornets from the fourth-place Pirates. North Valley was second (72) and Mazama finished third (67). Phoenix freshman Maggie Morefield broke her own school record in the 100 backstroke. Morefield's winning time was 1:09.83 compared to her previous best of 1:10.48. The Mazama girls won two of three relays and four individual events. Nichole Brown of Mazama won two events.
