Now, there's a chip and a crack about 9 inches long. My insurance won't cover the damage. Knock that sucker out — and your crack is gone! No charge. Seriously, those sanded roads from the recent snowfall must be keeping windshield repair companies in high demand. One of our Since You Asked minions was in the same predicament but got the chink in his windshield "drilled and filled" so it wouldn't send out a crack. It cost $35 at a local windshield repair shop and it's hardly noticeable. So sorry about yours that spidered into a full crack. A new windshield is expensive, and that's the only fix once it cracks like that. The good news is, as long as the crack doesn't obstruct your view, it is perfectly legal to drive in Oregon with a damaged windshield, said Medford Police Patrol Lt. Bob Hansen. By Oregon law, you really are not required to have a windshield, though the brisk air and bugs at highway speeds could prove problematic. But if you do have one, there is a law in Oregon that requires you have windshield wipers, Hansen said. Remember the Volkswagen microbus of the 1960s with the fold-down windshield?
