GOLF Allred qualifies for the U.S. Open Birdie on second playoff hole sends him to Oakmont Comment By Staff, wire reports MailTribune.com By Staff, wire reports Posted Jun. 7, 2016 at 1:41 PM Updated Jun 7, 2016 at 5:12 PM By Staff, wire reports Posted Jun. 7, 2016 at 1:41 PM Updated Jun 7, 2016 at 5:12 PM » Social News COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ashland native Jason Allred earned a spot in the U.S. Open after surviving a six-player playoff in the tough Columbus, Ohio, sectional on Tuesday at Wedgewood Golf & Country Club. Allred’s 3-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole sealed the opportunity to play in the year's second major, which starts June 16 at Oakmont (Pennsylvania) Country Club. Allred and five others tied at 5-under 137 for 36 holes on Monday, but with only five of the total of 13 spots available for advancement, they returned to the first tee Tuesday morning. All six players parred the first hole. Allred and Patrick Rodgers were forced to scramble for pars after their tee shots went awry. On the second hole, Allred hit his approach to 3 feet and Rodgers put his within 8 feet, and both made birdies to earn trips to the U.S. Open. When Daniel Summerhays missed a 5-foot par putt, he was eliminated and Luke Donald, Scottie Scheffler and Richard Schembechler II got in with pars. Donald is a former world No. 1 who has been eligible for every U.S. Open since 2005. Allred has played in three U.S. Opens: 2015 at Chambers Bay, 2010 at Pebble Beach and 2006 at Winged Foot. Schembechler qualified for his first U.S. Open, and what a coincidence that it took place not far from Ohio State. His grandfather was a cousin of Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler, who won only five times in Columbus. Elsewhere, Vijay Singh didn't come close to qualifying in Florida, which also didn't finish until Tuesday because of rain. He missed out by nine shots. Aron Price of Australia and Tim Wilkinson led the way, while Sam Horsfield and Matthew Borchert ended a five-man playoff for the last two spots with birdies on the first extra hole. That completed the 10 sectional qualifiers from coast to coast that offered 55 spots for the U.S. Open. Qualifiers previous were held in Japan and England. The USGA also set aside six spots to accommodate anyone who qualifies by cracking the top 60 in the world ranking after this week. If those spots are not taken, they will be filled from an alternate list.
