LOCAL ROUNDUP Mustangs belt Nuggets in Area 4 sweep GRANTS PASS -- The Medford Mustangs continued their winning ways Monday night, picking up a American Legion baseball Area 4 sweep of the Grants Pass Nuggets to improve to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in league. Medford won the opener 13-2 and took the nightcap 14-4. Grants Pass jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second game, but couldn't hold off the Mustangs who answered the challenge by scoring six runs in the top of the second inning. The second inning rally started when Nugget pitcher Cory Restvedt issued six straight walks to give the Mustangs two runs. Medford then added four more runs on a two-run single by Jason Brownell and a one-run single by Charlie Jensen. Mustang pitcher Tim Alvarez picked up his second win on the mound settling down after giving up four runs in the first inning. Through the next five innings, Alvarez was untouchable as he held Grants Pass to two hits, while fanning 11 and walking one. Jim Pickrel led Medford in the second game going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Brent Foster was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Brent Foster, who scored three times, led the Mustangs in the first game going a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Jensen chipped in with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs, while Phil Ouelette and Nate Mayben each had two hits and scored three runs apiece. Mustang pitcher Casey Campbell picked up his first win of the year in his first appearance striking out five and walking four in the first game. SOUTH MEDFORD COLTS 14-7, KLAMATH FALLS HAWKS 4-2 -- The South Medford Colts stomped the Hawks tallying 21 hits on the day for a twin bill sweep at home. South Medford (3-1 overall, 2-0 league) are in Eugene today to face Eugene West in a 5 p.m. doubleheader. In the first game, Kyle Hadley led the way for the Colts tallying three hits on the day. Colts reliever Jason Kruggel entered the game in the fourth inning to hold the Hawks to a single run on two hits to pick up the save for South. In the second game, Cory Sweet and Josh Tompkins had the hot bats as they each produced three hits to lead South.
