Can it be chipped back to base metal, then painted to retard the rust from corroding it further? Use a paint that will prevent the rust from taking over, and pick a color that will best suit the surroundings. — Robert B., Talent Rust sounds bad, but in the case of the pedestrian bridge over Barnett, it’s actually a good thing, Robert. We know that sounds counter-intuitive and doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense, but the bridge was designed to have a patina of rust, kind of like an old train trestle, which requires a lot less maintenance than a bridge that requires periodic painting. The type of steel used in the 155-foot span, a patented metal called “Cor-Ten,” is designed to rust, but not corrode to the point where the bridge becomes unsafe. If you look carefully, Robert, you will also see some staining of the columns supporting the span. The rust stains and the rusty steel were expected as part of the $2 million project, which was completed in 2010. Two other pedestrian bridges over Bear Creek resemble smaller versions of the Barnett crossing. We know what you’re saying, Robert. Why would anybody want a rusty bridge? Well, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the Barclays Building, which was built in 2012, had a rusty look before it was even completed. According to a New York Times article, the “weathering steel” or “Cor-Ten” was weathered off site so the rust wouldn’t drip onto the sidewalk or onto passersby in the rain. U.S. Steel, which owns the patent on weathering steel, claims the metal forms a protective layer of rust as it ages. Bridges, buildings and outdoor art have all been built with this type of steel, Robert. What will they think of next?
