"We played well enough to win but we didn’t play anywhere near our capabilities," said Tornado coach Dick Darcy. North Medford struck early when Dacarie Robertson zipped a centering pass to Alex Batzer, who drove a 25-yard shot to the far post six minutes into the game. The Cavers tied the score late in the first half on a goal by Megan Franko. North Medford outshot the Cavers 22-3 but the Grants Pass defense held out until the 66th minute when Batzer scored her second goal on an assist by Erin Heath. Grants Pass had a chance to score in the second half with a one-on-one between Laurine Cruz and North Medford goalkeeper Katy Kunkle, but the shot missed wide. Advertisement "I felt it was a good game," said Grants Pass coach Hector Cruz. "We missed two quality opportunities to put the game in our favor, but we just didn’t capitalize on them." Despite North Medford’s win, Darcy is convinced that his team can still improve. "We’ve got a lot more skill and ability than we showed today," he said. The undefeated Tornado will take on Roseburg (4-1 SOC) on Saturday. SOUTH MEDFORD 4, ASHLAND 3 — At Ashland, South Medford sophomore Chelsie O’Neill scored two goals and assisted on another in the see-saw match at North Mountain Park. O’Neill gave South (5-0 SOC) the initial lead at the sixth minute off a cross from Jill Walport inside the 18-yard mark. Ashland’s Hannah Sohl completed the first half scoring on a goal in the 11th minute. South grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute when O’Neill assisted Kaylyn Knutson. But the Grizzlies answered again six minutes later on Audrey Wilson’s score. Consecutive goals by the Panthers Emma McConnell and O’Neill five minutes apart gave South a 4-2 advantage. Ashland closed the gap on a penalty kick by Sylvia Van Ausdal with about three minutes to go. The teams each had 13 shots on goal, while Ashland had five corner kicks to three for South. ROSEBURG 3, CRATER 1 — At Central Point, Crater shocked Roseburg (4-1) with a goal in the third minute, but the Indians came back behind sophomore Julie Piper and senior Carli Godard. Rachael Smith got behind the Indians’ defense and scored from point-blank range to give the Comets the initial lead. Piper tied the game at the 11th minute on an assist from Godard, then Piper sent Roseburg into intermission with a 2-1 lead on an unassisted goal in the 22nd minute. About midway through the second half Godard scored unassisted to give the Indians some breathing room. Piper and Godard have combined for 13 of Roseburg’s 17 goals this season. Roseburg outshot Crater, 13-4. KLAMATH UNION 2, EAGLE POINT 1 — Sheyanne Bier’s first-half goal gave Eagle Point (0-5) the lead but Klamath Union (2-3) rallied in the second half to claim the SOC match. Senior striker Claire Edwards tied the match for the Pelicans, with an assist from Chelsea Lundy. Junior midfielder Denise Ledgerwood drilled the game- winner on a breakaway with two minutes remaining. Shawna Olson kept Eagle Point in the match with three diving saves. Klamath Union built a 25-5 advantage in shots on goal. SOC Boys NORTH MEDFORD 1, GRANTS PASS 0 — At Grants Pass, Aiden Morrell broke up a scoreless tie in the 70th minute with an unusual goal. Morrell took a crossing pass from Dusty Andries and got just enough foot on the ball to trickle it inside the far post for the game-winner. Both teams had some good opportunities and the pace of the game switched back and forth. North senior goalkeeper Oscar Benitez preserved the shutout with at least two saves off one-on-one situations in the second half. Senior Travis Bille also had a strong game in the net for Grants Pass. North Medford senior Luis Cabrera kept the pressure on Bille with some nifty offensive play. Midfielder Max Brown and defenders Scott Reid and Devon Torrey excelled for the Black Tornado (3-1). North finished with a 16-12 edge in shots. ROSEBURG 4, CRATER 0 — At Central Point, Crater wasn’t able to capitalize on some early opportunities before Roseburg seized the momentum. The Indians (4-1, 3-1 SOC) opened the scoring in the 15th minute on a goal by Juan Carlos Rodriguez off a Francisco Irazoqui assist. Senior forward Quentin Clark scored one minute before intermission on a free kick from 22 yards that deflected off the Comets’ wall. Clark and Merlin Plagge added second-half goals. Indian junior goalies Cuyler Zeigler and Jameson Baird registered the shutout.
