Knights eke one out over Pirates Skyline Conference girls basketball roundup MERLIN -- North Valley held on to a narrow lead in the fourth quarter to defeat Phoenix, 42-38, in a close Skyline Conference girls basketball game Friday. Neither team led by more than six points in the game, and North Valley (3-8, 1-0 Skyline) held on to a four-point lead after the third quarter for the victory. When Phoenix began fouling in the fourth quarter to regain possession of the ball, the Knights seized the opportunity to stretch their lead. "We hit our free throws down the stretch in the fourth quarter to keep our lead," North Valley coach Byron Robertson said. Andee Trader and Charlotte Beck led North Valley with 11 points each. MAZAMA 52, ROGUE RIVER 36 -- At Klamath Falls, Dena Young did it all in leading the Vikings to victory in their Skyline Conference opener. Young had 20 points, five assists, three steals and one blocked shot in leading Mazama (4-6, 1-0 Skyline). Mindy Bishop chipped in nine points and three steals, while Jandee Kahl had nine rebounds and six points for the Vikings. Mazama used a tenacious press to take a 32-17 halftime lead. HIDDEN VALLEY 51, LAKEVIEW 43 -- At Murphy, Hidden Valley wasted little time breaking its Skyline Conference losing streak as the Mustangs eased past Lakeview in the conference opener for both teams. Hidden Valley didn't win a game last season, let alone a Skyline matchup, but improved to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in league thanks to the efforts of Sheena Gannon and Jennifer Brown. Gannon scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Brown had 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Jamie Ruda paced Lakeview with 26 points, but the Honkers were hampered by 30 turnovers.
