The Medford Police Department has been crammed into 14,000 square feet of space on the bottom floor of City Hall. The new building going up across the street at the corner of Ivy and 10th streets will contain 46,500 square feet, with a secure parking garage. “I promise you, this will be the best-looking building on the block,” said Steve Lawrence, co-owner of Ashland-based Adroit Construction Co. Lawrence’s comment raised a few chuckles over his somewhat subtle reference to Jackson County’s new health services building, which has been criticized for its architectural style. In general, the design of the new police headquarters is similar to the Lithia headquarters, with lots of glass but with darker panels and masonry on the exterior. ORW Architecture of Medford designed the building. Total cost for the building, design and engineering is $21 million. Construction of the new police station and parking garage is budgeted at $18.8 million. The building will be earthquake resistant, providing a space for police to respond in case disaster strikes. The first floor of the station will feature a lobby, community room, records area, interview room and locker rooms for female and male officers. The second floor will have processing and interview rooms, as well as offices for investigators and patrol officers. An entrance known as a sally port will be located on the second floor of the parking garage to admit suspects and keep them separated from the public on the first floor. The third floor will feature training and briefing rooms and administrative offices. “It’s wonderful to see the MPD out of their temporary facilities,” Council President Daniel Bunn said. “This is due to all the hard work that MPD has put in over all the years.” Medford police Chief Tim George, who has said he was told the current quarters were temporary when he came to the department more than 30 years ago, said Monday the new building will provide Medford residents with a better police department. “It’s a place where quality, problem-solving police work will take place,” he said.
