The fourteenth concert of the 1916 season, held by the band at the city park on Friday evening, was a success. It was at first thought the divisions of the crowd for the Railway meeting at the Natatorium and the park concert would be anything but successful, but the large attendance at both entertainments was evidently the result of the proceeding spectacular street parade. The program given by the band on Friday evening was the most varied and best rendered of the season, four of the selections played would be given space in any band's program, Rossini's overture to "Tancred," and the arrangement of "operas" were excellently rendered. And the soldier's song "Till the Boys Come Home," brought a pleasant surprise when the musicians discarded instruments and gave the chorus vocally. "Love's Old Sweet Song" as a cornet solo by the bandmaster was probably one of the most appreciated numbers of the concert. The last march, one of Mr. Rowland's own compositions, was given great attention and the outburst of applause at the conclusion was a plain demand by the audience for a repetition. The march will compare favorably with the average. There are several intricate passages for the bass section. The theme is especially pretty at the last where the reeds and counter instruments have a variation. Next week's concert will be give on Friday evening at the park. LOCAL AND PERSONAL The military examining board of the Southern Oregon district consisting of Lieutenant Foss and second Lieutenant Dueul last night held examinations at the armory. Seven men from Medford and one from Ashland presented themselves. Of these Griffith Cowgill passed the examination for first class gunner and Arthur E. and Carjoll Powell passed that for second class gunner. A number of people of Medford attended the opening of the Ashland Chautauqua last night. The program was put on by a chorus of over 100 voices including the Medford Choral Society. The Chautauqua building was crowded for the event.
