The Chieftains took care of business in the opener with an 11-0, five-inning win, and appeared to be on their way to the twin triumph with a 5-0 lead after three innings in the nightcap. But the Mustangs came to life and rallied for an 11-9 victory. Rogue River (11-11, 10-7 Skyline) is tied for fourth with Phoenix in the conference, but stands two games behind second-place Mazama and North Valley with four contests remaining. The top three teams in the league advance to the state postseason. "It just kills us," Rogue River coach John White said. "It’s complicated, but the loss definitely hurts our playoff chances." Advertisement Ryan Girodat powered Rogue River to an easy victory in Game 1. The senior bashed two home runs and produced five RBIs. Girodat, who has four homers for the season, leads the Chiefs in all extra-base hit categories. Josh Hill added three hits for Rogue River and Gary Richardson had two doubles and three RBIs. In the second game, Cody Gustafson’s three-run homer highlighted a four-run Mustang outburst in the fourth inning that cut Rogue River’s lead to 5-4. "All of a sudden they thought they could be in it," said White. Then in the sixth, Hidden Valley (7-16, 6-11) scored five unearned runs to take an 11-7 lead. "We booted the ball a couple of times in the sixth and it snowballed," said White. "Nothing was hit very hard; it just happened to go in the right places." The Chieftains trailed 11-9 in the bottom of the seventh when Alex Waroff and Ryan Castro started the inning with singles. Then Joey Parrillo tagged a drive up the middle, but second baseman Kyler Kirchner snagged the liner and turned it into a game-ending triple play. "We had the meat of our order coming up," said White. "It looked like we were going to be able to pull it off." Holloway had two hits and three RBIs for third-ranked Henley (19-3, 14-3 Skyline). Wright (4-2) struck out eight and walked three against the Cougars (0-21, 0-17). Hornets Bryn Card and Josh Knapp had three hits apiece, and Michael Knapp had three RBIs. In Game 2, catcher Dane Hoppe and Holloway had three hits each along with Andrew Burg. Mike Bertsch hit a one-out double in the fourth for Illinois Valley, but was stranded at third. NORTH VALLEY 11-12, LAKEVIEW 1-2 — At Merlin, North Valley (16-5, 12-5 Skyline) ran its winning streak to eight games behind the pitching of Josh Makepeace and hitting of Ben Silva. Both games went five innings. The Knights, winners of 11 of their last 12 games, got a five-hitter from Makepeace in the opener. He struck out 10 and didn’t walk anyone. Silva knocked a two-run homer in each game and drove in three in the nightcap. Cascade Christian (5-14, 3-9 Dist. 6) committed six errors in each game. The Challengers’ only hits in the opener were a leadoff single by Matt Hauser in the fourth and a one-out single by Brian Thomas in the fifth. Cascade got on the board in the first inning of Game 2 when Aaron Grissom singled with one out, moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on Brian Ziegler’s single. Matt Hauser, Grissom and Ziegler each had two hits for the Challengers.
