Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 23, 2005 Disabled resident rescued from Medford house blaze Medford police and fire crews early Saturday rescued a handicapped man from a basement fire on Niantic Street, officials said. The blaze was reported by a neighbor who saw the flicker of fire through the windows of the residence in the 1000 block of Niantic Street. Police arrived at the scene before fire crews. They saw dark smoke coming from the windows directly below the bedrooms. The officers forced open the front door and with the help of two firefighters they found a man with braces on both legs and carried him outside, officials said. Crews then attacked the fire in the basement and searched the house for other occupants. The blaze was extinguished within minutes and no other people were found in the house, officials said. Damage to the building was limited to the basement area. The estimated loss was valued at $5,000. The home was equipped with two smoke detectors, neither of which worked because the batteries had been removed, officials said. Medford police and fire officials are currently investigating the cause of the blaze. A cause will be announced Monday morning, officials said.
