And it was the season’s first meet. For the Eagle boys Jake Olson shattered the school record in the shot put by about 3 feet, launching it 54-10¾ , and Robbie Johnston equaled his personal and school record in the pole vault with a leap of 16-0. The North Medford boys won, 94-51, and the Black Tornado girls triumphed, 114-28. Olson won despite decent efforts from North’s Dan O’Brien (52-5) and David Faaeteete (52-4¾ ). Advertisement "He went over 54 three times," said Eagle Point coach Mike Johnston. "That was cool. It was a very good series." Robbie Johnston, no relation to the coach, hit his mark despite using a shorter, five-step approach versus the usual seven or nine steps. "We really weren’t planning on going real high today," said Mike Johnston, adding that they didn’t consider going to the conventional approach as the bar raised to 16-3, where Robbie Johnston missed. "We stuck with the program. "Those (Olson’s and Johnston’s) have got to be two of the better marks in the state." For North, Josh Casebere long jumped 20-1½ and Faaeteete threw the discus 158-8. On the girls side, the top marks were Rachel Munyon’s 114-4 in the discus, Danielle Jordan’s 10:40 in the 3,000 and Lisa Louie’s 10-0 in the pole vault.
