Are they doing that and, if so, how do they get away with it? — Ron R., Medford Well, Ron, this is one of the more long-standing rumors along the upper Rogue River that us at Since You Asked Central have checked on from time to time. We've cast a line plenty of times in the Rogue and know that hatchery spring chinook — the only ones anglers can now keep — are tougher to catch than the wild ones, which must be released unharmed. It just so happens that the clipping cart is at Cole Rivers right now, automatically clipping the adipose fins off the smalls of the backs of more than 1.7 million spring chinook set for release into the Rogue this spring and fall, hatchery Manager David Pease says. Of those, 730,000 chinook smolts are set for release each in August and again in September, with 193,250 released in October and the final 50,000 released in March. Hatchery crews have been clipping the adipose fins of all the spring chinook they release since 2007, Pease says. The Rogue spring chinook clipping should be done next week, before the crews will turn their attention to fall chinook set for release into the Coos and Coquille rivers.
