Looking out the window of my retirement home recently, I was staggered to see a train going down the tracks toward greater Ashland, that is, the old depot. It consisted of a number of empty freight cars. I have to say that I let out an enormous shout and was very nearly wildly excited. I just had to tell each of you. This is big news to an old Ashlander like me. In 1927, my mother got off a leased train out of Philadelphia and tried to drink Ashland lithia water. I still have her diary. Vaugh Davis Bornet, age 97 Ashland Impressed with school board No one has the right to print as fact his or her own interpretation of the Constitution, especially a textbook author whose work was written to be used in a classroom. The Constitution should be presented as originally written, and a good teacher should be able to lead a discussion about various interpretations without injecting his or her own bias. I am very impressed with the thoroughness of our School Board members who took the time to actually read the textbook, and who noticed and questioned the author's insertions into the Constitution. I hope either the textbook will be rejected, or the author's comments will be removed. Nancy Kline Medford Using the same words How interesting to see Phyllis Fletcher’s letter to the editor in the Sunday Mail Tribune declaring her support for net neutrality. We both want net neutrality, and I am sure she wants what is best for America, as do I. She says that can be accomplished by supporting Greg Walden’s effort to undo the latest FCC ruling disallowing Internet service providers from blocking lawful content, or charging content producers like big corporations a fee for faster service. I have been celebrating the FCC’s decision to prevent the very same thing, because this keeps the Internet available on an equal basis for everyone without big money once again running the show and putting everyone else at a disadvantage. I consider myself to be in full support of net neutrality, and so does Ms. Fletcher. She apparently thinks America is best served by private Internet service provider corporations seeking to discriminate for profit, and I think there is a proper role for government in preventing over-reaching by private corporations. We are using the very same words, net neutrality, and want the very same thing for America, yet could not be further apart. What better example could there be of polarized thinking that characterizes American politics these days. Wendell Fitgerald Ashland Questions on pot, laws So the people of this state pass a law that goes against federal law; the law limits who can be taxed. But, the voters then pass a law to tax it, then the commissioners on their own say they’re not going to tax it — and you wonder why people don’t vote. Then, somebody please answer this question: If all these people smoke pot because Oregon says they can in June, who supports them when they can’t pass a drug test to get hired for a job? The taxpayer? Are you going to force the employer to change their rights? Is the state going to take responsibility if someone who gets hurt on the job is under the influence? Nobody thought about that, did they Dr. Bates or Peter Buckley? Tell it like it is, that it’s all about the dollar. OLCC is going to regulate it? Yeah right, like food stamps are supposed to be regulated or nursing homes don't overcharge veterans for their prescriptions. It's just another opportunity for corruption. Sometimes I wonder what our politicians are smoking. J.
