Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell Captured imaginations Gingerbread creations range from gale-tossed yacht to three insecure bears By PARIS ACHEN Mail Tribune Fear consumes the faces of the hamster sailors aboard the "Diddikai" as a fierce gale rocks the yacht back and forth in the slashing ocean within sight of a stone lighthouse on the cape. The riveting scene was depicted in sweetmeats at the GingerBread Jubilee Community Tour Saturday in downtown Medford, the annual fundraiser for the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater. "It’s so cool how she made the water so real," said Chloe McKinster, 10, of Grants Pass, as she admired the "Hamster & Commander" by Nikki Kristich, 17, of Trail. "It makes me want to do something like it myself." The "Hamster & Commander" portrays several animated hamsters in varied forms of frenzied activity. One, dressed in a blue shirt, peers through a telescope at the shore. Another yanks a cord to keep a sail in place. Advertisement A lighthouse stands above the drama. Bedecked with morning glory, the structure perches on a rock covered with lush vegetation. Kristich won the top prize in the student category and $500 for the creation, which sold at auction Friday for $1,800. Other gingerbread creations also captured the imagination with depictions from well-known stories, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears. "The Three Bears are putting a security system in, so Goldilocks can’t get in," Medford resident Brian Strickland explained to his daughters, Maizy, 3, and Brynn, 5, as they viewed the "Three Bears’ Christmas" by Lauren Simpson of Eagle Point. About 30 entries vied for six cash prizes this year in the adult and student categories. The creations were auctioned off Friday. The fundraiser garnered about $76,000 this year, about $20,000 more than last year, said organizer Karin Dailey.
