Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 9, 2005 Jack was injured in an August accident. Since You Asked: Jack’s feeling better, but he isn’t ready yet to hit the road "What’s the latest on ‘Jack’ the injured dog?" — Rick, via e-mail A badly injured stray dog rescued from a roadside ditch after being struck by a car on Old Stage Road, Aug. 8, is still in the hospital. Veterinarians agreed to operate after determining that Jack’s leg injuries, though severe, were fixable. Dr. Steve Ferreira repaired the trio of leg fractures — located on three different limbs — in an intensive 10-hour surgery. "He’s still at the vet office," says Jackson County Animal Care and Control Center technician Donna Patnesky. "He is going to remain there a little bit longer." Advertisement The young Rottweiler-Doberman mix is putting weight on one of his broken legs, but the other legs aren’t weight-bearing yet, says Patnesky. "He’s going to need rehabilitation and a foster home," she says. In spite of his accident, Jack is lucky, says Patnesky. The unlicensed, non-neutered dog was originally slated for euthanasia when his owner couldn’t be found. But Jack was spared when news reports of the pooch’s plight opened a floodgate of cash donations and adoption requests. The ‘Jack Fund’ is somewhere around $5,000, Patnesky says. Jack has been offered a few permanent homes by local dog-lovers, but as he’s been exhibiting a few behavioral issues which need watching. Nobody has been chomped, but Jack has been a bit snarky lately. He’s clearly pain sensitive, says Patnesk, and probably shouldn’t go to a home with small children. "We’ll get him into a home," says Patnesky. "We just want to make sure it’s the right one." Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
